Referensi tertulis pertama ditemukan dalam sebuah buku oleh penulis Spanyol Miguel de Cervantes, yang paling terkenal untuk menulis Don Quixote. Cervantes adalah seorang penjudi, dan karakter utama ceritanya Rinconete y Cortadillo, dari Novelas Ejemplares, adalah beberapa cheats bekerja di Seville. Mereka ahli dalam kecurangan pada ventiuna (Spanyol selama dua puluh satu), dan menyatakan bahwa objek dari permainan ini adalah untuk mencapai 21 poin tanpa melampaui dan ace yang nilai 1 atau 11 Permainan ini dimainkan dengan Spanyol Baraja dek, yang tidak memiliki delapan, sembilan dan sepuluh.
